‘Alien: Romulus’ wouldn’t exist without this deleted scene from ‘Aliens’
One of the blockbusters of the summer of 2024 was Alien: Romulus, written and directed by Fede Álvarez. This sci-fi horror film takes place between the first two. Foreignmovies and probably wouldn’t exist without a deleted scene from Aliens.
It was a big risk to even decide to make this film, but Alvarez did it anyway. The first two films in the franchise, Ridley Scott’s Alien and aliens by James Cameron, are timeless classics, but all the other sequels were a disappointment. Additionally, Sigourney Weaver made it clear that Ripley would never return, making the franchise even more difficult to continue.
Younger characters
Alien: Romulus contains references to those above Foreignmovies, but it also tells its own story with much younger characters. So Alvarez Alien: Romulus He started out, a big challenge awaited him, but it wasn’t the first time he was put in charge of a beloved franchise.
In 2013, he directed a successful (and very bloody) reboot of Evil Dead. That movie worked by keeping the essence of what we love about the “cabin in the woods” story, but replacing famous hero Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) with a younger cast.

Alien: Romulus did something similar. With Weaver out of the picture, this film takes place between Foreign in aliensduring the period when Ellen Ripley was sleeping in her escape pod. It was that last film that gave Álvarez the idea of what to do next.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Álvarez explained that a deleted scene aliensin which a group of young children walk through a space station, influenced their decision-making. He said: “My first instinct, to try something different that hadn’t been seen before, was to approach the story from the perspective of characters who are not professionals or scientists; they are not even adults.”
Children are just children
Continuous: “I liked the concept of putting people closer to the audience at the forefront of the story, not because the audience is young, but because the audience is completely ignorant of the reality of the space. When the characters are professionals, they know more than you. But when they are in their early 20s, they have no idea how the hell you operate an airlock.”
The deleted scene aliens What Álvarez refers to is neither long nor particularly broad. It lasts only a few seconds, but it shows us something we’ve never seen before: kids are just kids. In the final version, we see Newt running for his life, but in this deleted moment we see young people having fun without a care in the world, until the xenomorphs attack.
young adults
Foreign in aliens They are among the scariest horror films ever made. The monsters, the music, and the tension are perfect, whether it’s Scott’s slow buildup or Cameron’s intensity. What both films have in common is that they are directed by adults. In Foreign We follow the crew of the Nostromo, made up of intelligent professionals. In aliens We are going with a group of marines.
In Alien: Romulus On the other hand, we follow young adults who have no idea what they are doing and have little control over their personal lives. Rain (Cailee Spaeny) is an orphan with no family, except for an android brother named Andy (David Jonsson) and an ex-boyfriend named Tyler (Archie Renaux). Tyler has a sister, Kay (Isabela Merced), who is pregnant.
To look at?
When they board a ship to steal some equipment, everyone is completely out of their element. When the facehuggers appear and new xenomorphs are born, we don’t see tough heroes ready to defeat the aliens, but rather a group of terrified young people fleeing and trying to survive.
