India wins Gold Medal in Chess Olympiad after a dramatic and controversial finish

After a dramatic and controversial match in the online Chess Olympiad, India were awarded joint gold medal winners after a match with Russia on Sunday. Initially it was declared that India had lost the final but then they lodged an appeal stating that the players had poor internet connectivity due to the failure of the server. This was the first time that the Chess Olympiad was hosted online by FIDE.

After the lodging of complaint FIDE investigated upon the matter and after about an hour the FIDE President declared the gold medal to be awarded to both the teams. The players Nihal Sarin and Divya Deshmukh lost their internet connectivity and thus lost their time. Before the loss of connection, Divya Deshmukh was in a winning position. Vishwanathan Anand congratulated both the teams by tweeting, “We are the champions!! Congrats Russia!”.
