Tony narrowly escaped a wormhole in space where he deflected the bomb aimed at the city and saved the day, but it came at a price.

Killian, driven by his contempt for Tony Stark and his desire for power, wages a campaign of terror under the cover of The Mandarin, a fake version of a real-life figure played by bumbling actor Trevor Slattery (Kingsley). After Stark and Colonel Rhodes (Cheadle) track down “The Mandarin” and uncover the deception, they wrest crucial information from Slattery about Killian’s final plan.
Slattery accidentally hints that Killian’s motives are somehow related to the Vice President of the United States. With Pepper Potts (Paltrow) already kidnapped and Rhodes’ Iron Patriot suit taken, Stark and Rhodes know they must act quickly to thwart Killian’s plans for the vice president.Vice President
Stark calls Vice President Rodriguez to warn him of the danger he may face, but he appears to be safe at home as he prepares to celebrate Christmas with his family, surrounded by members of the Secret Service. When the Vice President assures them that the President is also safe, currently aboard Air Force One with Colonel Rhodes, Rhodes corrects him.
“Sir, this is Colonel Rhodes. They are using the Iron Patriot as a Trojan horse. They are going to take out the president one way or another. We need to alert that plane immediately,” Rhodes warns. The vice president assures them that he will alert Air Force One and ensure the president’s safety.
Small but important role
However, when he hangs up, the vice president acts as if nothing happened and returns to his family. That’s when we meet his daughter and Ortega makes his MCU debut. Her father kisses her on the head and tells her that he loves her. We see that she uses a wheelchair. When the camera pans down, it appears that one of his legs was amputated at some point or was not fully formed at birth.
This is all the information we get, but it’s enough to understand that the vice president chose to help Killian assassinate the president, almost certainly with the promise that Extremis would be used to help his daughter. So Ortega’s role is small, but important for the history of Iron Man 3.
