Marvel’s Ant-Man 3 Is Hitting Bottom on Rotten Tomatoes
Rotten Tomatoes has a whopping 140 reviews Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania picked up. The resulting consensus is not exactly good. In fact, Marvel Studios has the second ‘Rotten‘ in MCU history.
The movie press almost always gets to see new theatrical films before the rest of the world. Often during the official premiere of the film in question. There’s nothing wrong with that, but a remarkable situation arises around the accompanying embargo.
Comments vs. reviews
Critics are often not allowed to post their reviews for at least a week, partly to avoid spoilers. There is nothing wrong with that in itself, but today those same journalists can already share their first reactions on Twitter. Vague hints, no spoilers, a tentative conclusion rarely really critical, staying within the allowable frameworks.
The problem? In practice, this means that such reactions almost always turn out to be much more positive than the final criticisms. This is especially the case with big blockbusters. Carry black adam: the discrepancy was huge with that movie. The final consensus on Rotten Tomatoes, which collects reviews from critics, took a drastic turn look more negative than the first sounds on Twitter.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
It is not without reason that we started talking about this striking dynamic. After all, last week we got to see the first reactions to A.nt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania share, the latest Marvel movie. The ambitious beginning of phase 5 of the MCU, and the film debut of the sequel to Thanos: Kang the Conqueror.
The first reactions were largely very positive. In fact, the blockbuster Peyton Reed’s was even called “Star Wars of Marvel.” You can feel it coming: the embargo is now out of the picture, and journalists have launched their reviews in droves on the internet and in newspapers, and the consensus is anything but… overwhelming.
Rotten at Rotten Tomatoes
In fact, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the second film in the vast history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe inRotten‘ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Only 53 percent of well-known critics whose platform has been able to index a review of the film are positive about the new one. Ant Man. Translating that score to unsatisfactory is perhaps too simplistic, but it should be made clear that critics aren’t really pleased with the movie. And we’re not talking about a sour handful: that score is based on no fewer than 140 reviews.
The consensus summarized by Rotten Tomatoes reads: “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania generally lacks the spark of fun that took previous adventures to the next level, but Jonathan Majors’ Kang is an exciting villain ready to change the course of the MCU.”
Kang can’t save the Marvel movie
The fact that Kang is the highlight of the film was also continually brought up in early reactions. However, according to Rolling Stone’s David Fear, Jonathan Majors can’t save the Marvel movie:Quantum it’s somehow heavy without feeling substantial, almost hopeless in its boredom. Even with the occasional joke, he makes eternal gives a cheerful impression compared to this movie.”
Precisely: eternal it’s the only other MCU movie that’s officially ‘Rotten’ is on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 47 percent rating. The people in the Netherlands are also quite ruthless. Volkskrant speaks of a “interim low point” for Marvel and gives the film one star, and Algemeen Dagblad concludes that Quantum “drowning in computer soup”, with just two stars as a result.
And then the rest?
With a score of 53 percent, there are also plenty of critics who are positive about it. Quantum are. 47 percent, to be exact. Though even the reviewers who approved of it can’t help but express their disappointment: “If it were a meal, it would be beautifully served and have the most beautiful sauce, but when you slice into it, deep down it’s just a great Mac,” Luke Thompson aptly concludes. SuperHeroHype. Oh.
Fortunately, you can already judge for yourself. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is already in theaters in the Netherlands. Still, as a superfan you might as well wonder if Marvel Studios hasn’t lost its way a bit, especially after the already lackluster Phase 4…
