Warner Bros. Discovery and New Line Cinema reach agreement for more ‘Lord of the Rings’ films
Despite previous upcoming seasons the rings of power from Amazon Studios and the animated film The War of the Rohirrim, plus The Lord of the Rings seems to be on the way.
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have signed a multi-year deal with Swedish game company Embracer Group, which currently owns the film rights. The contract allows the studios to develop more films based on the work of JRR Tolkien. The Lord of the rings in The Hobbit.
The plans were announced by CEO David Zaslav at a Warner Bros. Discovery investor meeting last Thursday. Zaslav previously indicated that the study would focus more on the largest franchises.
no remakes
However, fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, Warner Bros. movie studio heads, seem to have no interest in reshooting the Peter Jackson trilogies.
“Twenty years ago, New Line took an unprecedented leap of faith to bring the incredible stories, characters and world of The Lord of the Rings to the big screen. The result was a groundbreaking film series that has been embraced by generations. of fanatics”.DeLuca and Abdy report.
“But for all the scope and detail lovingly wrapped up in the two trilogies, the vast, complex and fast-paced universe that JRR Tolkien has envisioned remains largely undiscovered in the film.”
The statement seems to indicate that the studios will therefore put a primary focus on the as-yet-unexplored stories of Middle-earth, such as the upcoming The Rohirrim War. But what about the recent series from Amazon Studios?
Unexplored and new stories
Where Peter Jackson’s trilogies explore the Third Age of Middle-earth, the story of the the rings of power established during the Second Age. Tolkien described stories set around this time in works that were not published until after Tolkien’s death, such as the silmarillion in unfinished tales.
Amazon only owns the television rights. The Lord of the ringsin The Hobbit, which references the stories and characters of this era through Appendices. It is now owned by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have the film rights to both works.
However, it seems unlikely (but not impossible) that Warner Bros. will film the same era, but try to tell new stories within the same era of the Jackson trilogies. Think, for example, of spin-offs around Aragorn, Bilbo or Gandalf.
Peter Jackson?
Every time these rumors and plans make the news, an exuberant discussion breaks out among fans. So Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are often understandably expected to be in on the schemes in some way.
However, fans can also breathe a sigh of relief for this. The trio give an encouraging response to the news and are apparently being kept informed by the studios.
“Warner Bros. and Embracer have kept us updated every step of the way. We look forward to continuing to speak with them and hear their vision for the franchise.”said the trio.
Peter Jackson previously indicated that Amazon had contacted him about the rings of power, mainly to supervise the scripts. She received no further responses to this at the time.

In the meantime, there is still a lot of content to come for you to enjoy. Currently, the recordings of the second season of the rings of power already in full swing.
