Symptoms of AIDS

India is the third-largest country to be affected by the HIV epidemic in the world. The key population affected in India are sex workers, people who inject drugs, hijras/ transgender people, migrant workers, and truck drivers. The symptoms of AIDS are usually weight loss, body ache, sore throat, muscle pain, etc.

How is AIDS transmitted?

Modes of transmission of AIDS are,

1) SexualTransmission
AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Having unprotected intercourse may lead to AIDS, from an infected to a non-infected person.

2) Blood contact
AIDS is also transmitted by contaminated blood transfusion. Among drug users, this route of transmission is significant as exposure is repeated often. As a result, needle-sharing by drug users is a major cause of AIDS in many countries.

3) Mother to child
HIV passes from an infected mother to her fetus, by the means of the placenta or during delivery, or even by breast-feeding. The risk of infection is higher if the mother is newly infected, or she has already developed AIDS. HIV-infected infants and children progress rapidly to AIDS. Transmission from mother to child can be prevented by anti-retroviral drug prophylaxis, the elective caesarian section before the onset of labor, and by refraining from breastfeeding.
