The Challenge and Season 2

Netflix has released a sneak peek of not one, but two new squid gameseries: The second season of the show that started it all and the controversial reality version of the South Korean original.

In the middle of the pandemic, Netflix suddenly had a mega hit with squid game. A series that is there together with the Oscar winner Parasite suddenly introduced the whole world to the magic of South Korean movies and series. Since then, Disney and Netflix have invested heavily in new content from the country, and we’ve already recommended six must-watch South Korean thrillers.

Squid Game: The Challenge

In addition to a truckload of new series, Netflix is of course also going squid game milk further. We’ve known for some time that in addition to a second season, a reality series about the franchise will also be released. In fact, the reality series was recently debunked. In February revealed Vanity Fair that the production has been described as a “manipulated and traumatic disaster” by the contestants. In fact, some participants even considered taking legal action at the time.

Legal action or not, the Netflix Original is coming. Last week, the streaming service revealed a first taste of the show, which apparently Squid Game: The Challenge will be called 456 entrants who registered for the slightly less deadly version of the hit series are competing for a grand prize of more than 4 million euros.

Netflix releases first teaser

This makes it the largest jackpot in reality television history, according to Netflix. In the first teaser for Squid Game: The Challenge we see the participants in the familiar green tracksuits playing the infamous game red light, green light play. You probably remember the scene: the contestants have to get to the other side in Annemaria’s cuckoo style, but if they get caught, a gigantic machine knocks them down. Something that obviously does not happen to the participants of the reality series. At least, that’s what the trailer leaves in the middle…

The trailer produces a double sensation. Exactly the game that we can see is what the controversy was mainly about: “Even when hypothermia hit, the participants were willing to stay as long as possible because there was a lot of money at stake. Too many people were determined not to move and stayed that way for too long. It looked like a war zone. The doctors took the people out, but we couldn’t say anything. If you talk, you’re out,” a participant told Britain’s The Sun.

Criticism on Twitter

In November we will be able to judge if all that misery at least makes for an entertaining show. In that month comes Squid Game: The Challenge to Netflix. On Twitter, people especially notice how ironic it is that a reality series was made. squid game: “Do you know how oppressive it is to see Netflix turn a show that was a critique of capitalism into a reality show.”

“Make a real one squid gameThe series is the equivalent of inventing Skynet from the Terminator movies,” wrote another tweeter. “Good job with ignoring all the message of squid game.”

Squid Game Season 2 Cast Announcement

and the regular squid game that? That show is also coming back. In 2024, the second season of the series that started it all will arrive on Netflix. Before that, the streaming service only had one cast announcement to share last week. Surprisingly, Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo return in the new season. The new cast members are Im Siwan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun.

Netflix isn’t releasing anything on how the heck you can make a new season with the old cast after the first season finale. However, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had this to say about the new season: “It took 12 years to finish the first season of squid game to bring to life. But it took 12 days before squid game it became the most popular Netflix series ever. As a writer, director and producer of squid game, a big hello to the fans around the world. Thanks for watching and loving our show. And now Gi-hun returns. The leader returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with the ddakji may return. You also meet Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su. Join us again for another round!”
