Escapist cult movies from the 80s and 90s on Netflix

Cult films can be good or bad, but in this article we will focus on films on the qualitatively strong side of the spectrum. What these eight films have in common, besides a good IMDb score and a release year in the ’80s or ’90s, is that they became ingrained in the collective consciousness with unforgettable characters, plots, and lines.

1. Die Hard (1988)

IMDb score: 8.2
Where to stream? Disney+, Pathé Thuis, between Christmas and New Year on RTL 7

We’ll start right away die hard. Actually the ultimate alternative Christmas movie, but a few days later is fine too. Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman play cat and mouse in a simple but excellent action film. Not only on Disney+ and Pathé Thuis. All Die Hard films will also be broadcast this week on RTL 7.

2. Repository Man (1984)

IMDb score: 6.8
Where to stream? Amazon Prime Video

Otto is a bored punk who, as a “repo man”, has to recover a car with something strange in the trunk. This car is driven by a lobotomized nuclear scientist. Absurd? Yes, but also good.

3. Scream (1996)

IMDb score: 7.4
Where to stream? netflix

The first and only Shout what you need to see. Just like the recently released sixth film starring Courtney Cox, but thirty years ago and a lot of botox. Horror and horror parody at the same time, and that makes it fun.

4. Spaceship Soldiers (1997)

IMDb score: 7.3
Where to stream? Disney+

Local cult, because it is the vehicle of Paul Verhoeven. A group of young soldiers fight giant insects in a futuristic war. Action movie, romantic comedy parody and political satire in one.

5. Office Space (1997)

IMDb score: 7.6
Where to stream? Disney+

Cult with a capital C. Movie about an amazing office job full of absurd scenesANDnes that still rear their heads twenty years later, in the era of memes. With the editors’ favorite scene: the murder of the printer in the meadow.

6. Villa Pleasant (1998)

IMDb score: 7.5
Where to stream? Amazon Prime Video

In Pleasantville Two 90s teenagers get trapped in a 50s black and white comedy, where everyone pretends life is perfect. Throughout the film, color gradually enters the town. Cult film with top-notch cast: Tobey Maguire, Jeff Daniels and Reese Witherspoon.

7. War Games (1983)

IMDb score: 7.1
Where to stream? Amazon Prime Video

Cult of DOS with computers from the 80s. A teenager accidentally hacks a military supercomputer and almost causes a nuclear war. All the clichés about hackers were born in war games.

8. The Addams Family (1991)

IMDb score: 6.9
Where to stream? netflix

For the rest, something from the Netflix range. After the original series The Addams Family from the 1960s, this was the first film of the revival in 1991. This was followed by more television series and recently two animated films plus spin-offs. The level of this first film was never reached again.

New on Netflix in December 2024
