This Sci-Fi Movie Was Delayed for Years, But It Was Still a Big Flop

Due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, many movies were postponed, but sometimes this happens for other reasons as well. For example, the superhero movie The New Mutants was released even during the pandemic due to delays.

When director Josh Boone, known for The Fault in Our Stars, among others, was appointed in May 2015 to X-Men-split The new mutants to direct, it seemed like a promising new addition to the franchise was on the way.

Stand out
At that time the film cycle reached its peak. 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past brought two different X-MenThey teamed up on a time travel adventure and it became the most financially successful film in the series.

Boone’s interpretation of the material would go the horror route, with a story about teenage mutants trapped in a mysterious institution and having to try to save themselves. This sounded more like a Blumhouse horror movie than a traditional superhero movie.

Delays
Boone wrote the script. The new mutants along with Knate Lee. They began working on the film shortly after Boone wrapped. The Fault in Our Stars. Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga and Adam Beach star The new mutants.

It was first postponed until February 2019 for re-filming. The film was subsequently delayed until August 2019 while Disney completed its acquisition of Fox.

Coronapandemic

When the film finally hit theaters on August 28, 2020, the world was in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and the X-MenThe franchise was already dying after the disastrous launch of Dark Phoenix in 2019. The fact that the film had been severely mutilated during editing over the years was clearly noticeable while watching.

Scathing reviews
The final product was halfway between a mediocre horror movie, a teen drama, and a low-budget superhero movie. With a gross of just $49 million against a production budget of between $67 and $80 million, everyone involved probably wishes the film never came out.

The new mutants also received scathing reviews and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 36%. The critical consensus on the website reads: “With a list of potentially explosive ingredients that remains largely lax, The New Mutants is a spin-off franchise that is less than the sum of its super-powered parts.”
