There is a new best movie of all time.

There is a new best movie of all time. At least, if Letterboxd, an online platform for moviegoers, is to be believed.

If you want to know if a new movie is as good as you hoped, Rotten Tomatoes is the place to go. The goal of the platform is to collect as many critic reviews as possible, in order to calculate some kind of total score. A final score that reflects the consensus among journalists, as well as the assessments of the general public. A different approach than IMDb, which pretends to be a kind of Wikipedia of the film and television industry.

Letterboxd: paradise for film buffs

For true moviegoers, there is a third, and actually superior, destination: Letterboxd. A social network for true movie buffs, with surprisingly in-depth reviews from your fellow enthusiasts for every movie, and most of all, a huge number of curated lists.

The best French thrillers, detective films of the nineties – there is a list for each specific genre. Also cool: movie posters are central to almost every page, so you can wander through a visual version of movie history.

The best films of all time.

Users can add movies they have watched to their profile and rate them. So an evaluation. You guessed it: That ensures that in addition to IMDb’s well-known 250 Greatest Movies of All Time, there’s also a comparable overview of Letterboxd.

The platform has two variants: one top 250 with movies which have been reviewed more than 5000 times, and a top 50 with movies which have been reviewed less than 5000 times. Ideal: This way you can also discover hidden gems in addition to the well-known titles. Not the cliché blockbusters you’ve seen thousands of times on Netflix. Recommended!

Spider-Man as the new champion

We didn’t start without reason with that Letterboxd top 250. There is a new champion. The platform took all the movies with more than 5,000 ratings and then leaked stand-up specials, concert recordings, short films, and documentaries. That leaves the list below, with the new number 1… Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse! The new successor of the revolutionary In the Spider-Verse It has been in theaters since last week and is praised everywhere. The animated film has a top rating of 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. On IMDb, the counter is even at a thick 9.1. So a really cool movie.

You can check out the rest of the top 50 below. Fun fact: The top-ranked movies in IMDb’s top 250 missing from Letterboxd’s main list are Forrest Gump (11 on IMDb), Matrix (17 on IMDb) and The green Mile (28 on IMDb). Poor Tom Hanks. Another fun stat: The “best” decade in movie history is the 1990s, with 36 movies. The most successful is the great Japanese master Akira Kurosawa, with eight films. At least we have a long list of movies to add to our watch list!
